Ceasar MMAs journey with Whanake Ake.

Descendant of Kahungunu, born and bred in Heretaunga, Pane Haraki had dreamed of opening his own gym for over 17 years. With his extensive expertise in martial arts, a passion for training fighters and a Diploma in Sport, Rec & Business Pane was ready to take action and make his dream a reality.

Seeking a bit of guidance and financial assistance, Pane was applying for the MSD Flexi-Wage for Self-employment, when he crossed paths with Tipu Ake Tonu's Whanake Ake Māori Business Support Programme. Kaiārahi Pakihi Jack recognised Pane's skills and passion and knew with some support, Pane's business idea could be brought to life. Jack and Pane immediately started chipping away at the business plan. “Jack provided me with the right guidance and helped me design my business plan,” Pane explained.

By talking through his ideas with Jack and putting them on paper, Pane created a roadmap to launch and grow his business. Not only achieving positive outcomes for himself and his whānau but also impacting the Hawke’s Bay community. Something he had always envisioned. Pane has since been a successful applicant for the MSD Flexi-Wage for Self-Employment grant, receiving funding to support his gym financially. Tipu Ake Tonu company director, Theresa Carter says "Māori business is not just about making financial profit. We take a holistic approach to business ensuring profitability extends beyond the financial realm. It's about whānau prosperity. The pandemic has created an opportunity for whānau to start their own businesses, especially in markets that support health and wellbeing as people navigate the negative impacts of covid."

Come June 2021, Panes hard work and dedication paid off, ‘Ceasar MMA’ officially opened with a pōwhiri. He explains the significance of the name Ceasar, “Ceasar is named after my dad Jack who passed away on Ceasar MMA whenua 11 years ago.” The opening was a momentous occasion attended by many whānau and members of the MMA community including distinguished fighter Dan Hooker.

Ceasar MMA is now thriving and working towards their goals of producing high calibre fighters while encouraging and empowering whānau through health and fitness. Pane strives to "Produce World Champions and to empower the people physically, mentally and spiritually". We are so proud of Pane and look forward to monitoring his growth as we continue to offer guidance where necessary.
