Kurawaka | Wāhine Māori Business Start-Up Programme

With support from Te Puni Kōkiri (Ministry of Māori Development), we have been delivering the Kurawaka kaupapa to a strong and wonderful roopū of wāhine Māori. The selection process was challenging with so many inspiring concepts and more registrations than we had expected. We are now half-way through our first course and have covered four Pou/Modules:

  • Pou Tuia - The Weaving Together and Identifying your Why

  • Pou Tūhuratia - Knowing your Customer

  • Pou Manākitanga - Growing Relationships through Networking & Marketing.

The scene for the programme was set with the weekend Pou - Hinerei wānanga with Māori Movement. It saw increased levels of mana motuhake, self awareness, belief and a strong sense of whānau amongst our wāhine. Moving forward, we are grateful to have three wāhine guest facilitators on board to share their expertise in their fields and create connections with the participants.

We have been providing the roopū with weekly mahi kāinga/homework. They collectively set kawa/rules that they all follow and it is clear to see their growth and dedication. We are excited to see what they deliver on Te Pō Whakahirahira | Celebration Night.

“I couldn’t have thought of a better way to start a business course by getting to know ourselves deeper, unpacking and letting things go! The teachings have opened my mind to reconnect with my taha māori side both for business and for my whanau. I feel that with the Hinerei wānanga has been the perfect opening to start my business journey and I cannot wait to learn from these Wāhine Toa like Theresa and Sally!” - Kurawaka Participant

“I was hesitant about the unknown and was not confident in myself. After going through the Kurawaka kaupapa and how it would benefit us both in business and personally, I knew this kaupapa was for me and stood with my values. I left Hinerei wānanga feeling empowered to not only start a business but a business that wouldn’t JUST be a job, but my passion and purpose as well. I feel excited and ready to make my dreams reality.”

During our recruitment phase we received enquiries and registration requests for Kurawaka from all over the country. Highlighting the need for kaupapa like ours and the willingness of wāhine to engage in such support. We are in the process of developing this kaupapa to be delivered online or in mixed modes, in 2021. Stay connected with us to find out when this offering will be available to you or others you know.
